Villages of Valtellina

Valtellina is a valley in the northern Italian province of Sondrio which borders Switzerland. This summer, we spent time in an assortment of quaint Valtellinese towns and comunes. Morbegno, with its frescoed façades, fountains, and Roman bridge spanning the Adda river, is the home town of my father-in-law and my husband’s paternal lineage. Driving from there up into the mountains to reach Pescegallo and the family’s mountain cabin, you must first pass through Gerola Alta and by its picturesque clocktower. Chiavenna is also a short drive away, situated right on the river Mera with its glistening river stones, and the nearby Acquafraggia waterfalls. Lastly, Colico, located on the shores of Lake Como, is easily accessible from Morbegno via the Sentiero Valtellina, a dedicated bike path.
