During my senior year of college, I had the opportunity to visit a few grad schools, including a couple in California. Stanford had a great chemistry department and a beautiful campus, with its sandstone arches and red-tiled roofs. The university’s motto,“Die Luft der Freiheit weht,” is German for “The wind of freedom blows.” However, that wind was not strong enough to take me from the East to the West coast.
