North Governorate

North Lebanon is one of the country’s eight governorates, or muhafazahs. The region formerly reached to Syria, but recently Akkar has separated from the North. The decision was made in 2003 but the implementation of the new region started in 2014 and is still ongoing. The capital of the North Governorate is Tripoli, but photos in this album were taken outside of the city.

On our first day in the country, we drove with my grandparents to eat lunch at a restaurant in Kousba, a Greek Orthodox village in the mountains. On another day, we visited the Baatara Gorge, a 250 meter deep sinkhole. The waterfall is formed by melting snow in the mountains, and the water flow was low during our visit in July. Three land bridges traverse the enormous pothole, one of which we were able to walk across.
