Animals and Art

January 3, 2022 · Yale · Invited Lecture

“Animals and Art” was a presentation given in the zoom-based lecture series hosted by the Animal Ethics Study Group at the Yale Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics.

During this participatory seminar, we engaged in decelerative close looking with a set of artworks depicting human-animal interactions at the Yale University Art Gallery. I demonstrated the value of visual and material culture as the basis for meaningful investigation into the historical and philosophical treatment of animals across cultures and time periods. Through careful observation, analysis, and guided dialogue, we explored conceptions of livestock and companion animals by artists in context as well as the ways in which art can activate our own ethical stances toward nonhuman animals.
